Saturday 3/30: Body Percussion

Many vernacular dance forms have a tradition of using the whole of the human body as an instrument. Matthew’s style of body percussion draws inspiration from African gumboot, African-American stepping and hambone, and other dance traditions to create a rhythmic mix of movement and music sure to surprise and delight. This class will let you find coordination and rhythm you didn’t know you had, as you feel patterns of clapping, snapping, and stepping bring you together with the rest of the room.

Sunday 3/31: Tap & Flatfooting

Tap dance and flatfooting have a long, intertwined history and share a broad spectrum of movement vocabulary. In this class, we will explore their shared musicality and economy of motion to solidify a foundation of rhythmic building blocks. We will also apply musical ideas from tap traditions to clogging and flatfooting vocabulary to examine musical phrasing and open new doors in our choreography and improvisation. A great class for students of any level, including beginners who want a fast-paced course including steps and improv drills, as well as more experienced solo dancers who want to revisit the basics to hone their technique, facility and repertoire.
